Is Preschool Graduation Relevant
Oak Park Preschool (OPP) consider preschool to be a real milestone which help students remember how they launch their educational journey. This milestone is very evident in the number of parents and grandparents who returto register their children, grandchildren, and other family members. They are always excited to share their memories and experiences of OPP. They often remember their preschool teacher. This has help us to understand howimportant OPP has been to the Oak Park community and motivates us, as teachers, to continue developing programs that help instill into our children an eagerness to enjoy learning and growing to experience success during long educational journey through high school and beyond. It is our hope as teachers that our preschoolers will develop a love for learning and become contributing citizens in their communities and the world. And, thathis love for learning will become a lifelong journey.
One of the most difficult skills for preschool teachers in preparing children for this journey is social and emotional development accomplished through positive discipline. Students come from many diverse backgrounds including multicultural ethnic groups, dual language learners, and special needs. For this reason, students are encourage to work at their own pace and not to get discourage or angry when they do not grasp skills as fasas they want to. However, all children promoted to kindergarten and transitional kindergarten leave with knowledge gain in the following child development areas.
- Motor Skills
- Self-Care
- Social and Emotional Development
- Language Skills
- Approaches to Learning
- General Knowledge
- Holding a pencil
- Using scissors
- Identifying and letters and writing some of them
- Sorting and grouping items
- Knowing how to hold a book
- The difference between fiction and nonfiction
Today you will see these skills demonstrated in the students’ work and graduation activities with song music, and art. Also, please take time to review the website which display many activities that the teachers anstudents complete in the classroom. Most importantly, please take time to listen to the children talk about their accomplishments and encourage their learning and growth.
Building a child’s confidence through positive discipline:
“Positive discipline is to encourage good behavior by fostering mutual respect between adult-whether that’s a parent, teacher other carer-and the child. It is not about teaching adults to manage children, but teachinchildren to manage themselves.”
